Impact of student sports on social integration and interpersonal relationships in the university environment
The study is devoted to the analysis of the role of student sports in social integration and the formation of interpersonal relations in a multicultural university environment. Based on a mixed methodology (questionnaires for 70 students and interviews with 30 respondents), it was found out that systematic participation in sports events, especially team events, contributes to the expansion of social contacts, confidence building and reduction of academic stress. The results show that 64% of students exercise regularly, with athletes having on average twice as many friends at the university (8.5 against 4.2 for non-athletes). Correlation analysis confirmed a strong link between the frequency of team sports (soccer, volleyball) and the level of integration (70%). Cross-cultural cases (Ski competitions “Snowflake”, Spartakiad for the Rector’s Cup) showed that sports contribute to the adaptation of foreign students (91% of participants noted the strengthening of ties) and the overcoming of gender stereotypes (70% of women in volleyball). Participants of team sports are more likely to develop leadership skills (88%) and improve academic collaboration (49%). However, limitations were identified: study load (12% of students cannot combine sports and study) and preference for individual disciplines (low level of integration in 12% of athletes). The study emphasizes the need to develop inclusive programs that take into account cultural differences and the balance of physical/learning activity. The findings indicate that sport is a key tool for building social cohesion (94%), student pride for the university (87%) and reduction of conflicts (79%).
